What Ni-Resist is
Ni-Resist irons are austenitic cast irons alloyed with a high percentage of nickel. ASTM A439 covers the ductile (nodular graphite) versions. They hold up to corrosion, heat and erosion far better than ordinary gray or ductile iron while still casting like iron.
Type D-2 is the general-purpose grade, widely used for pump and valve parts. Type D-5 carries more nickel and has a very low rate of thermal expansion, for parts that must stay dimensionally stable as temperature changes.
Typical Ni-Resist parts
- Pump casings, impellers and bowls
- Valve bodies and components
- Parts exposed to seawater, brine or corrosive process fluids
- Components that run hot
What to send for a quote
- A drawing or 3D model (PDF, DWG, DXF, STEP or IGES), or photos and measurements of the part
- Material and grade, if you know it
- Quantity per run, and roughly how many a year
- Whether you need it as-cast or ready for machining, and any testing or certification

Frequently asked questions
Do you pour Ni-Resist D-2 castings for pumps?
Yes. We pour ASTM A439 Type D-2 and Type D-5 Ni-Resist, and pump and valve is one of the industries we serve.
What is the difference between Ni-Resist D-2 and D-5?
Both are austenitic ductile irons. D-2 is the general-purpose corrosion and heat resistant grade. D-5 has more nickel and very low thermal expansion, for parts that must hold dimensions through temperature changes.
